Miranda is just the coolest, and was an absolute delight to talk shop with. She is also going to be featured on the upcoming panel discussion I’m hosting about time and texture as tools in our expressive arsenal; the other guests will be Sam Bergman and Benjamin Whitcomb. I’ve gotten used to having a soft Kiwi accent on the show, so I may have to source a bullpen of alternate New Zealanders to keep the streak going in the episodes that follow, as Miranda is awfully busy.
Miranda’s latest work Notes for Cellists is available at the Juilliard bookstore and most other places you buy books.
I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed making it for you!
A few years ago I discovered “The Well-Tempered Cello: Life with Bach’s Cello Suites”. Through reading that I learned about Gabrielli’s ricercari. When I mentioned the Gabrielli to my teacher, a retired college cello professor, he said he hadn’t looked at them in years. He ended up making the ricercar a focus for his studio that year. Very much looking forward to reading “Notes for Cellists”.
It’s a fab little book. The Gabrielli are so interesting because they don’t align with what became much of cello writing orthodoxy. They keep me on my toes every time I pull them out.
