Hey there! In preparation for my teaching tour of road tripping cello-y goodness, I am in need of some fresh tunes for the ol’ iPod. So please, pretty please, would you recommend songs, iMixes, or even whole albums you think would do me well on the 10 hour drives between cities? I have about $200 to spend in iTunes credits and it’s burning a hole in my pocket!

Amazing image lifted from dustydavis.com, btw.

  1. You no doubt have much more sophisticated taste than I do, but I’ll tell one thing wife and I take on road trips: most anything from gourd.com. {embarrasingly dumb typo removed on previous post}

  2. I’m not sure what you’re looking for, but I like the following. Artist – Album: Bowerbirds – Hymns for a Dark Horse, Beirut – The Flying Club Cup, Sea Wolf – Leaves in the River, Sara Lov – 3 Songs, Nouvelle Vague – Nouvelle Vague. Good Luck on your music treasure hunt. :o)

  3. Terry: I will check it out. Although I am immersed in Hungarian right now, my nearly 3/4 Irish roots are woefully underrepresented in my music collection. Done a few Celtic gigs (much respect to the fiddlers I played with) and should do more. My chops were never so sharp as they were when I had to listen as hard as I was reading: crazy phrasing over the barline!

Theresa: I love NV! Guns of Brixton has been on my shuffle forever! Gonna check out the others.

Good call CM. I actually *ahem* play a little uke myself, and was saddened by his passing. But I don’t have anything except Over the Rainbow/Wonderful World. I could definitely use some Island inspiration on my trip.

  4. Metallica – Turn the Page, Wherever I May Roam … well, basically anything, but particularly the “black album” (self-titled)

  5. Oh Mike! Way ahead of ya! I have everything up to and including the Black album (Spinal Tap reference!). I was a big Ride the Lightning/Master of Puppets girl back in the day. 🙂 Complete with slight scowl and cutoffs over leggings.

    I was that girl.

  6. Well, if you’re a fan of Nouvelle Vague, perhaps you should look into Keren Ann (I suggest “Nolita” or the self titled album) she has that smoldering french chanteuse thing going for her. Simple, emotive, and authentic. Camille is the singer of Guns of Brixton, I would recommend her first two albums “Les Sacs des Filles” and “Le Fil” … uh oh… now you know what a francophile I am. (as if my daughter’s name wasn’t already a tip off) ;o)

  7. Listen to something epic, like the Gotterdaemmerung. Substantial enough to get you through a few desert drives.

I guess you’re on the road already. When I make incredibly huge “Texas-Sized” trips, I tend to find that even the best music starts to become background noise and I need to alternate between spoken word and music in order to stay awake.

I hope you have some company besides the cello.

    Happy Teaching and safe trip!

  8. It’s just me on this trip, but I think it’s just what I need at this particular juncture. I have lots of Pema Chodron spoken word, and also Italian and Hungarian audio courses. I actually like to listen to local radio, too. Something about country music on a road trip, I guess. Wagner, eh? When it comes to big German stuff, I tend more towards Ein Heldenleben and Till Eulenspiegel. I was friends with brass players in college 🙂 I’ll put ol’ Dick Wagner on the iPod just for you, though.

  9. Sorry I’m a little late to this game. It’s been a crazy few weeks.

Best road trip CD ever would have to be Kathleen Edwards’ “Back To Me.” It never fails to remind me of northern California, the beautiful desolation of Nevada, and the comparative lushness of Utah.

Here are some other road trip album recommendations:

    Casey Dienel – “Wind-Up Canary”
Ben Folds Five – first album
    Aimee Mann – ‘Magnolia’ soundtrack
    Yann Tiersen – Amelie
    Snow Patrol – Final Straw
    The Church – Starfish
The Mystery of Rampo – soundtrack
    Emilie Simon – anything 🙂
    Emmylou Harris – Wrecking Ball
Erin McKeown – We Will Become Like Birds

Love to know what you think of any of these. Continue to have a great trip!

p.s. – Would it be possible to change your comment settings to allow for more options besides Blogger, for those of us with our own URL’s? 🙂

  10. For your trip home:

A cello-y selection: Beethoven Triple Concerto played by Eroica Trio. Sara is awesome in it! You’re right – that Beethoven guy is completely unsympathetic to the difficulties on the cello – but he does dare the cellist to play beautiful stuff 🙂

New discovery for me: Guiliani Guitar concertos played by Pepe Romero – I’d like to marry him.

    Have a safe trip home!
