That’s fine.

No really. It’s totally fine.

Do your thing.

Strange that you don’t want to improve today, though. I mean, it’s understandable. You’re tired. Or have ennui. Or lost sight of the goal. You’re bored. Or whatever.

But if you choose not to practice today, don’t write to me and ask what you can do to improve. Not when someone else is busting their butt on the exact same thing and finding the answers the hard way. Which is, incidentally, the only way.

Practice today only if you’re one of those people who want to improve.

Are you one of them?

    1. Nah. If you read this blog long enough, you know that it’s mostly advice to myself. This is a pep talk I sometimes employ when I’m over it. I always feel better the next day when I’ve buckled down and just plowed through some scales and technique.

      1. Good,
I beat myself up enough for not practicing. I come hear for a humorous break — not to be berated. I can do that on my own, thank you very much.

  2. It might be different for singers, but when I take a break for a day or two, I come back and bang out a difficult passage in no time flat. It might just be my mind since we are all different, but sometimes I need to give my mind (and body) a break! (but I DO understand what you are saying!)

    1. Amber: sure, taking a day off here and there is great. This is more in response to the general excuse making and procrastination that creeps into so many would-be successful trajectories. Also, singers use their instrument all the time…conversation, breathing, even eating! Most instrumentalists I know (myself included) play best after, oh, 200 consecutive days of practice. 🙂

  3. This just convinced me to get back to finishing my practice session. I’ve had a terrible session so far tonight and feel really “up against it”- to the point where I searched ‘what to do when you don’t feel like practicing’, ha! Thanks for the reminder about what it takes to improve!
